Polar Caves

This poem was inspired by a recent family trip to New Hampshire.

Walking amidst the tall trees
Breathing in the smell of evergreens
Fresh air
Different paths to take
Moments shared with my family

The first cave:
smooth, wet rocks
darkness
bending low
the temperature of the air plummets
emerging into the warmth of sunlight.

More caves
surrounded by large rocks,
climbing down,
slippery,
winding tunnels,
ducking,
crawling,
sliding on my bottom,
carefully planning each move
seeking hints of sunlight

Holding my breath...
praying no one gets hurt,
waiting to see the light at the end
of the "Orange Crush"

Brave adventurous girls,
proud parents,
beautiful views,
experiencing the wonders of nature.
